Customs, China, beloved husband of Ducia and son of the late Lieutenant-General R.B. Prettejohn, C.B. (Colonel, 13th Hussars), and Mrs. B.M. Prettejohn. No mourning or flowers by his special request. Cremation at Cheltenham, Friday, April 16, 11.30 a.m.
The Times, Saturday, Aug 13, 1938; pg. 13; Issue 48072; col D Foreign Decorations The King has granted to Mr. Hugh Edward Prettejohn Royal licence and authority to wear the Insignia of the Order of the Brilliant Jade (White Cravat with Red and Blue borders), conferred upon him by the President of the National Government of the Republic of China.
The Times, Monday, Jun 27, 1932; pg. 11; Issue 46170; col B Harbin Customs Seized Manchukuo Goavernment's Action From Our Special Correspondent Harbin. June 26 Manchukuo police surrounded the Customs premises near midnight on Saturday, when the staff were off duty........ The Commissioner, Mr. Prettejohn, and the senior officers promptly appeared and were informed that the police had been instructed to maintain observation and ensure removals.
Today a Japanese official of the Manchukuo Government notified the Commissioner of the intention to take over the Customs, and invited him to continue work as usual. When the Commissioner refused, he was told that a new organisation would assume control, and the Manchukuo flag was then hoisted.
Last night and this morning the Chinese staff living with their families in the Customs quarters on the river front, were pressed so strongly to remain in the new service that they had no option but to sign on.
The Times, Tuesday, Jul 19, 1932; pg. 13; Issue 46189; col E British Official Evicted at Harbin Shanghai, July 18.--Sir Frederick Maze, Inspector-General of the Chinese Customs, has received news from Mr. H.E. Prettejohn, British Customs Commissioner at Harbin, that the Manchukuo Police "at the instigation of Japanese adviser," have instructed him to vacate his residence immediately. Mr. Prettejohn is appealing to the British Consular authorities.
