The Times, Friday, Nov 29, 1968; pg. 12; Issue 57421; col G The Rev. the Earl of Lauderdale, whos body was taken from the sea at Angmering, Sussex, on Wednesday, was assistant priest at St. Mary's church, east Preston, Sussex. He was 64. The fully clothed body was seen in the water by a boy who told the police.
The Rev. Afred Sydney Frederick Maitland, 16th Earl of Lauderdale, was born on April 17, 1904, the son of the Rev. the Hon. S.G.W. Maitland, and was educated at Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge, and Cuddesdon College. He was ordained in 1927. He had held several curacies in the Midlands and in the south of England and from 1957 to 1960 was rector of Catsfield, Sussex. He succeeded his cousin in 1953.
Alfred married Norah Mary La Touche, daughter of William Henry La Touche and Unknown, on 6 Aug 1938.
Alfred next married Irene Alice May Shipton, daughter of Rev. Charles Percy Shipton and Unknown, on 4 Jun 1940.
