In 1841 (Census) Nicholas (aged 11) was living with his uncle, James Kingswell (aged 15) and his maternal grandfather, also James Kingswell (aged 65) in Broad Street, True Blue, Portsmouth with his brother Edward (aged 6).

1861 Census:

Nicholas (aged 30) was described as farming 120 acres employing 4 men and 2 boys at Thurlstone (Worthy, Poundles Park and North Upton) living with his wife Mary Grace and their three children, KIngsell, Walter Lamble and Sarah Kate

1871 Census:

Nicholas married Mary Grace Hurrell, daughter of Richard Hurrell and Susanna, 1856, March Q in Kingsbridge. (Mary Grace Hurrell was born on 11 Jul 1830 in Loddiswell, Devon, died on 27 Dec 1893 in Tremorvah, Dartmouth and was buried on 31 Dec 1893.)
