Mission to Beersheba July 13 1917
90 years ago today......
Two Australian B.E.2e aircraft on a photo reconnaissance mission to Beersheba failed to connect with it's No. 14 Sqdn escorts.
They were attacked near Tel esh Sheria by German aircraft.
The B.E.2e flown by pilot Ltn. Baillieu with observer Ltn. Barbie force landed behind British lines.
The other B.E.2e flown by 2/Ltn. Searle with observer Ltn. Paget crashed near Esani with both aircrew found dead in the wreakage.
The victory was credited to pilot Ltn. Schmarjie and observer Ltn. Fritzsche in a Rumpler C.1
The following day Gerhard Felmy dropped a message from 3000 feet on the British airfield. He received gunfire from the ground and had to make off over the sea.
